GCSE maths and science tutor in East London: what to look for
2 November 2026 · 5 min read · Growing Roots Academy
Maths and science are the two subjects home-educating families in East London most often ask for help with. They build topic on topic, the exams reward technique as much as knowledge, and science adds required practicals to think about. Here is what to look for before you pay anyone.
Why maths and science are different
A child can catch up on history or geography with a good textbook. Maths and science are harder to self-teach because each new topic assumes the last one is secure, and a small gap in Year 8 algebra becomes a wall in Year 10. Regular teaching with feedback catches those gaps early — which is why steady weekly lessons usually beat last-minute cramming.
One-to-one tutor or live small-group classes?
A one-to-one GCSE maths tutor in London typically charges £30–£60 an hour and covers one subject. Live small-group classes teach the whole specification across the year, cost less per lesson, and give your child classmates to work alongside. Many families use classes for the full course and add a tutor only if a specific topic needs extra attention.
Questions to ask before you commit
- Which exam board and specification do you teach — AQA, Edexcel or OCR?
- Will my child be entered for foundation or higher tier, and who decides?
- How do you cover the required practicals in science?
- How often do pupils do timed past-paper practice?
- How is progress reported to parents?
- Are you DBS checked, and what are your safeguarding rules?
Tiers, practicals and past papers
GCSE maths and combined science are tiered — foundation caps the grade at 5, higher opens 4 to 9 — so the tier decision matters and should be made from real mock results, not guesswork. The science required practicals are assessed in the written papers, but your child still needs to have learned them properly. Timed past-paper practice from the spring of Year 10 onwards is what turns knowledge into marks.
Home-educated? Sort the exam centre early
Home-educated pupils sit GCSEs as private candidates, so you need an exam centre as well as teaching. Centres in and around East London fill up quickly — start looking 12–18 months before the exams. Our private-candidate GCSE guide for London families explains entries, deadlines and costs.
