Online GCSE courses for home-educated students: what to look for

31 October 2026 · 6 min read

For home-educated teenagers, online GCSE courses are often the bridge between flexible home learning and recognised qualifications. But courses vary enormously. Here is what actually matters when you choose.

Live teaching or recorded videos?

Many 'online courses' are libraries of pre-recorded videos with a multiple-choice quiz. They suit very self-directed learners, but most teenagers do better with a real teacher: someone who explains, answers questions live, marks written work and notices when a student is quietly lost.

At Growing Roots Academy every GCSE lesson is taught live in a small group, with recordings kept for revision — so students get both the interaction and the ability to revisit any lesson.

Check the exam board and tier

GCSEs are set by exam boards — mainly AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR — and the specifications differ. A good course tells you exactly which specification it teaches, and for subjects like maths and sciences, which tier (Foundation or Higher) it prepares you for. Our courses follow the three main boards, chosen subject by subject.

Understand private candidate entry

Home-educated students sit GCSEs as private candidates at an approved exam centre. The course provider teaches; the centre hosts the exam. Entries close months before the exam series, and subjects with coursework, practical endorsements or speaking assessments need a centre equipped for them.

Look for a provider that helps with this rather than leaving it to you. We help families find a local centre that accepts private candidates, choose the right board and tier, meet entry deadlines, and arrange access arrangements such as extra time where needed.

Ask about marked work and feedback

GCSE success is built on written practice with real marking. Ask how often work is marked, who marks it, and whether feedback is written and specific. Weekly marked homework should be the norm, not a premium extra.

Compare total costs

Add up the course fee, the exam centre fees (roughly £100–£200 per subject all-in) and any textbook or resource costs. Our fees page shows our course prices plainly, with a deposit-plus-instalments option and a sibling discount.
